Oni-gawara Artisan, Yuhiro Date
As a young female artisan inheriting traditional Japanese techniques, Yuhiro is gaining attention from various media including television, radio, and newspapers. From an early age, she devoted herself to classical ballet and was aiming to become an idol entertainer, but at the age of 20, she decided to become an Oni-gawara Artisan. She began studying under Ishikawa Tomoaki who made the Oni-gawara for Tokyo’s Kabukiza Theatre, and Ito Hideki who crafted Oni-gawara for many shrines and temples. In 2017, at the age of 23, she passed the stringent Aichi Prefectural Oni-gawara Traditional Artisan Evaluation Skills Test. Incorporating feminine designs, she is working hard to promote and preserve the world of Oni-gawara.
